FAQ's
How do I become an assessor?
This is a difficult question to answer because each state and province has their own specific requirements. To start it is suggested you contact your state or provincial oversight board or body for information. Typically, this may be a state or provincial revenue department. They in turn may refer you to your state or provincial assessing association.
Where can I find and take assessing classes?
Each state and province has outlined those organizations whose coursework is currently accepted for ad valorem education. The first step is to contact your respective oversight body to learn what organizations are accepted and what specific courses have been approved. The next step is to learn which of the approved courses may currently be offered. To do so, it is suggested you visit each organizations web site for their educational offering details. In addition, the NRAAO offers an Annual Conference every spring featuring IAAO classes and workshops.
How do I become a member of the NRAAO?
Membership is open to any person with an interest in assessing. Only those who are considered Regular members as defined in our By-laws can hold office, vote and serve on certain committees. Click here for an application.
What is the IAAO? How do I join?
The International Association Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) is the international association devoted to our profession, of which we are an affiliate. Like the NRAAO it is interested in all aspects of the assessment profession and is the leader in assessment education, tax policy and technical standards. If you are also interested in becoming a member of the IAAO, please feel free to contact your state or provincial Representative or visit the IAAO website for more information.
